Notebook atau yang lebih keren disebut laptop merupakan produk primadona yang mulai digemari banyak orang dalam 2 tahun terakhir ini. Notebook kini bukan hanya digunakan oleh para bapak atau ibu untuk bekerja, namun juga pelajar bahkan anak-anak untuk bermain atau mengerjakan tugas. Faktor-faktor apa yang harus dipertimbangkan ketika kita akan memilih notebook ? Kemudian, setelah kita memilikinya, tip-tip apa saja yang diperlukan agar notebook kita ‘panjang umur’ ?

Faktor-faktor yang perlu dijadikan bahan pertimbangan ketika akan memilih notebook :

1. Bobot dan casing
Batasan berat yang ideal adalah 1,6 – 2,2 kg, dan terkait dengan ukuran layar. Notebook dengan berat di bawah 2,2 kg memiliki ukuran layar 12-13 inchi dengan resolusi 1280×800pixel, dan itu sama seperti notebook ukuran 14-15 inchi. Bahan casing yang paling sering digunakan adalah plastik polimer (seperti acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) karena ringan, tetapi bukan penghantar panas yang baik. Notebook kelas menengah ke atas menggunakan casing dari bahan campuran logam seperti magnesium alloy. Bahan ini lebih kuat dan mendistribusikan panas ke semua area casing dengan lebih baik.

2. Processor
Jika dipetakan, saat ini ada 5 kelompok besar processor yang digunakan notebook. Tiga kelompok paling besar adalah processor Intel versi dual core, yaitu generasi Yonah (nama resminya Core Duo T2xxx), Merom (Core 2 Duo T5xxx dan T7xxx), dan Santa Rosa (Core 2 Duo T7xxx dengan x bilangan genap). Dua kelompok lagi adalah notebook yang menggunakan processot low-end, yaitu AMD Sempron dan Intel Celeron. Keunggulan processor Core 2 Duo memiliki performa dan manajemen penggunaan daya yang lebih baik, sehingga lebih cepat dan hemat listrik. Sedangkan processor AMD Sempron dan Celeron harganya lebih murah tetapi performanya juga tidak jelek, sudah bisa menjalankan aplikasi standar seperti Office atau browsing.

3. Kapasitas Memori
Jika tidak banyak data yang ingin disimpan di notebook, kapasitas memorinya cukup 512 MB. Namun jika kita berminat menggunakan Windows Vista, sebaiknya gunakan memori berkapasitas 1 GB.

4. Fasilitas Pendukung
Fasilitas yang paling sering digunakan dalam notebook adalah WiFi, Bluetooth, card reader, dan DVD writer. Fasilitas lain yang juga menjadi variabel harga adalah sistem operasi, Windows Vista Ultimate seharga US$ 393, Windows Vista Home Basic dan Home Premium seharga US$ 150-300, Windows XP Home Edition seharga Rp. 700 ribu. Atau bisa juga melirik Linux dengan versi terbarunya Ubuntu.

OQO Model 2+

I was never a fan of the tiny UMPC machines that hit the market place at inflated prices before the massive netbook revolution. The thing I never liked about the little machines was that the keyboards tended to be sized for thumb use only and I just couldn’t see them being useful in the real world.

One of the cool looking UMPCs at CES 2009 was the OQO Model 2+. The little machine promised an Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, OLED touch screen and more. I was rather excited to see it at CES 2009 and while interesting, I didn’t think it stacked up at all against the mass of netbooks around.

Toshiba’s mini NB205-N310 netbook struck a chord with its snazzy design, comfortable island keyboard, and stellar battery life, but realizing that $50 can make a difference in today’s economy—not to mention the competitive netbook market—the company opted to create a budget version, the $349 mini NB205-N210. While it lacks the silver island-style keyboard, ribbed lid, and Bluetooth of the $399 mini NB205-310, the NB205-N210 has the same internal specs. So while you lose the flair of the more premium version, you still get a snappy netbook whose high-capacity battery provides more than 9 hours of endurance for $50 less.

Design

The major change between the NB205-N210 and the NB205-N310 is aesthetics. Where the NB205-N310 had a Sable Brown lid (also available in Royal Blue, Posh Pink, and Frost White) with raised diagonal lines, the more affordable version only comes in a glossy Fusion Finish in Black Onyx; while the lid has a similar pinstriped look, the lines are not raised, and it is much more fingerprint-prone. Also gone is the shiny bronze hinge; however, the glossy black hinge (with a glowing power button at the center) is attractive in its own way.

At 10.4 x 7.6 x 1.3 inches, the NB205 is fairly compact, although not as slim as the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA (10.3 x 7.0 x 1.0) or the Acer Aspire One AOD250 (10.2 x 7.2 x 1.0). Additionally, this netbook’s standard six-cell battery juts out from the back of the system. Weighing 2.8 pounds by itself, the NB205 and its AC adapter came in at 3.4 pounds, and didn’t put much strain on our shoulder as we walked around New York City.

Basic Keyboard, Solid Touchpad

Aside from the chassis, the most obvious difference between the NB205-N210 and the N310 is the keyboard. While the N310 has a metal island keyboard, the N210 has a plastic panel with more traditional keys. Though not as attractive, the keyboard remains comfortable and sturdy; we achieved the same typing score as that on the N310—a strong 80 words per minute with a one percent error rate on the Ten Thumbs typing test (www.tenthumbstypingtutor.com). Comparatively, we had a two percent error rate on the Samsung N120.
